At the Community School, we designed our lower school’s special education services to help students with learning differences reach their highest level of academic success. Since 1968, our mission has remained the same: to provide each student with an individualized education that addresses their unique learning style so that each child can develop to their fullest potential. In addition to strong academics, we offer an array of arts, clubs, and athletics programs designed to foster creativity, teamwork, and leadership skills.

Since 1968, our mission has remained the same: to provide each student with an individualized education that addresses their unique learning style so that each child can develop to their fullest potential.

Reading & Writing

Our special education services include daily lessons in reading and writing through instruction and remediation in word identification, vocabulary development, and comprehension. Our literature courses expose students to various novels, plays, short stories, informational text, and poetry. Our English courses focus on writing and composition skills, including paragraph development, essay writing, editing, research, grammar, spelling, and language usage.

Mathematics

At the Community School, we believe that a well-rounded education is essential for success in life. Our mathematics courses develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills through inquiry-based learning. We teach our classes in small to medium-sized groups of children according to level, instructional needs, and learning style. Our teachers present new material using concrete aids to ensure comprehension.

Science & Social Studies

The science and social studies curriculum at the Community School emphasizes active, hands-on learning experiences in all courses. We have designed our classes so that students may learn through experience.

Our students acquire information, develop skills, and foster thinking and creativity through these courses. We pride ourselves on providing the opportunity to involve our students in discussion, reflection, writing, reading, study skills development, trips, projects, and experiences of many kinds.

Technology Program

This program offers students the opportunity to learn about and use various types of technology, including computers, software, and other digital tools. The Technology Program also helps students develop essential problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity skills. We believe this program gives our students a competitive edge in today's technological world. We are committed to providing our students with the best possible education and preparing them for success in their future endeavors.

Therapy Programs

The Community School designed the therapy programs to help students with communication and motor skills. Our speech and language program offers small group or individual sessions to develop receptive language, expressive language, social skills, and articulation. Our visual- motor class is provided individually or in small groups and focuses on improving handwriting, keyboarding skills, and copying from the board. The Handwriting Without Tears program is utilized in our classes to help students improve their writing skills.

Health & Physical Education

We offer Health classes in a small group setting. Topics discussed include family life, body systems, personal hygiene, nutrition, safety, and alcohol/drug/tobacco abuse. The methodology consists of videos, lectures, demonstrations, discussions, interactive whiteboard presentations, and paper and pencil activities.

Daily Physical Education classes develop gross motor skills and teach team sports while fostering good sportsmanship. Cooperative activities are included in the Physical Education Program to promote cooperation rather than competition. The activities build self-esteem and a sense of community among students.
